JOANNA LUMLEY

DEAD WHALES & DOLPHINS

Joanna Lumley has urged Boris Johnson to STOP! the “needless” detonation of wartime bombs at sea because it can cause deafness and even death in vulnerable whales and dolphins. Underwater explosions are crippling and fatal to marine species.

In a letter to the prime minister and his fiancee, Carrie Symonds, who is a conservationist and animal welfare campaigner, the actor describes underwater explosions used to clear ordnance ahead of windfarm construction in the UK as “truly shocking in scale”, with a “devastating impact” on marine mammals.

Her intervention came after a report last week said that noise pollution in the ocean was being dangerously overlooked.

In the seas around Britain, an estimated 50 detonations are carried out every year, but this figure is likely to increase as a result of the quadrupling of offshore windfarms as part of Johnson’s pledge to power every home using wind energy by 2030.

In her letter, Lumley, who supports the windfarm programme, said she hoped they would both agree it “should not come at the expense of damage to our marine life”.

“I think we owe it to our marine life to do all that we can.

She cited a 2015 government-funded study that concluded that one of Britain’s largest mass strandings of whales a decade ago was likely caused by offshore bomb disposal.can to prevent such a situation ever happening again – both on our beaches and many miles out at sea.”

Last year, a German study concluded that eight porpoises were deafened and died in August 2019 as a result of explosions used to clear second world war mines in German protection zones in the Baltic Sea. Autopsies were carried out on 24 of the mammals after 41 were found dead on beaches.

Lumley, who has previously used her profile to campaign for the rights of former Gurkha soldiers to live in the UK, fronts a campaign called Stop Sea Blasts, which is backed by four marine conservation charities and several MPs. A petition calling for an end to the practice has been signed by 100,000 people.

The campaign is calling for windfarm contractors to use an alternative and quieter method of clearing ordnance, called “deflagration”,

A BIT ABOUT US

Blue Seas protection was founded originally by professional marine salvors Captain Silas Oates and his son Captain Garry Oates in the 80’s when they donated a Trawler to Greenpeace which became Rainbow Warrior and subsequently blown up by the French government for protesting against their nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll near New Zealand in the Pacific. Having lived all his professional life at Sea as a commercial diver and marine salvage expert and experiencing first hand the devastating effects of man’s “Crimes in the oceans” as he terms them Captain Oates, along with two other Trustees, formed a small constituted charity to fight these crimes. Beginning initially with the idea to recover ghost fishing gear from the ocean this quickly grew into several other areas needing urgent attention, not least of all the issues of plastic in the ocean, shark finning, whaling, protecting endangered marine species, local community and environment, overfishing and bycatch, effects of climate change and marine pollution other than plastic and so on.

One of our initial projects “Operation Sea Sweep” saw over 28000 pieces of rubbish and plastic recovered from the ocean and coastline of the Isle of Wight in one year, using a combination of local Community beach clean volunteers and ocean floating debris collection using our patent-pending registered equipment attached to our boat .

We were awarded recognition from Isle of Wight Council’s Community Action Awards in the Environment category for this achievement in May 2019.

Joanna Lumley calls for WW2 bombs being cleared for wind farms to be quietly 'burnt out' because blowing them up is making dolphins deaf

Some 100,000 tonnes of unexploded munitions lurk in the waters around Britain

Before wind farms can be built, these bombs must be cleared from the sea bed

However, detonating them can directly harm and deafen marine mammals

Ms Lumley and marine conservation charities are calling for a better approach

'Low order deflagration' can destroy bombs both more quietly but also cheaply

Actress Joanna Lumley has called on wind farm developers to stop blowing up unexploded WWII bombs in the seas around Britain because she says it deafens whales and dolphins.

It is estimated that some 100,000 tonnes of unexploded wartime munitions lurk in Britain's waters — much of which needs clearing to make way for new wind farms.

But the traditional way of disposing of these bombs on the sea bed — blowing them up with another explosive device — has the potential to harm marine life.

Not only can blast waves physically injure whales and dolphins, but the sound of the explosion can damage their hearing, which is key for navigation and communication.

Confused and disoriented by the sounds, the marine mammals can end up stranded on beaches and shorelines — a situation which can easily prove fatal.

The continued use of the 'blow-it-up' approach is 'completely nuts', Ms Lumley said — especially given that there is a far less dangerous approach available.

'To date, detonating large ordnance in the marine environment has been a necessary method in attempts to build offshore wind capacity that will enable us to reduce our carbon footprint,' said Marine Connection co-founder Liz Sandeman.

Despite the end benefits, she explained, 'detonating 500 kilogram explosives has far more serious consequences that cannot be fully mitigated — including auditory damage to marine mammals.'

'It’s crazy to me that wind farm developers — aided by government regulations that are far too relaxed — are able to just blow up bombs that are leftover from the Second World War,' said Ms. Lumley.

'Of course, we need to be finding new ways of getting our energy, such as offshore wind power – I fully support that.'

'It just seems completely nuts to me that we are allowing these giant explosions to cause considerable harm to some of our most precious whale and dolphin species when there is a viable alternative available — and a British-inspired one too.'

The low-order deflagration was developed by Chippenham-based explosives company Alford Technologies back in the early 2000s — and has the added advantage of being cheaper to implement than its less subtle counterpart.

Ms Lumley has teamed up with animal welfare organizations Advocating Wild, Marine Connection, and the World Cetacean Alliance to launch the Stop Sea Blasts campaign and help minimize the harm to our sea life.

Unfortunately, the damage has already been done by the detonation technique.

In 2011, for example, 39 long-finned pilot whales became stranded — and 19 eventually perished — at the Kyle of Durness, an inlet on the north coast of Scotland, after they entered the bay at high tide.

A Government report subsequently concluded that bomb disposal operations in the area in the days leading up to the tragedy were 'the only external event with the potential to cause' the whale strandings.

Experts estimate that each detonation may cause up to 60 marine mammals to lose their hearing. At present, some 50 such explosions are unleashed in British waters each year — a figure likely to rise as demands for wind farm construction increases.

'For whales and dolphins […] ammunition removal by blasting is a particular hazard as it can cause severe physical injury, hearing loss or death.'

'Less harmful, evidence-based alternatives are available — and government regulators and wind farm developers should immediately take notice.'

Stop Sea Blasts has launched a petition on Change.org.

The explosion of foreign supertrawlers in UK MPAs.

Fishing time in the first half of 2020 doubles 2019 effort.

Fishing by large foreign-owned pelagic supertrawlers over 100m in length in UK Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) has rocketed this year and has been increasing significantly since 2017 Fifteen of the supertrawlers operating in UK waters in 2019 were Russian-owned. Nine were Dutch-owned, and one was Polish-owned. One of the supertrawlers active in UK waters, the Frank Bonefaas, is UK-flagged, but under Dutch ownership.

A DEFRA spokesperson said: “The UK is a global leader in the fight to protect our seas with our ‘Blue Belt’ of protected waters nearly twice the size of England.

 this crime in our ocean?

In 2019, supertrawlers spent 2,963 hours fishing in 39 protected areas, while in the first six months of 2020, supertrawlers spent 5,590 hours fishing in 19 protected areas “Our government allowing destructive supertrawlers to fish for thousands of hours every year in MPAs makes a mockery of the word ‘protected’.”

The British public overwhelmingly backs a ban on supertrawler operations in UK MPAs. A YouGov poll showed that four in five UK adults back a ban, with support cutting across political divides. In October 2020, over 50 MPs signed an open letter to environment secretary George Eustice urging him to commit to a ban on supertrawler operations in UK MPAs. Over 80 MPs signed but he still wont ban them why?

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) was created as a conservation tool, intended to provide sustainable seafoods this has NOT  WORKED.

Its know become a money making organisation that does little for the oceans or fish stocks, instead concentrating on its £24,000,000 income per year.

-positive incentives that would improve the status and management of fisheries.

During its 15 years, the MSC, which has an annual budget of close to £20 million, has attached its logo to more than 170 fisheries.

 These certifications have not occurred

without protest. Despite high costs and difficult procedures, conservation organizations and other groups have

filed and paid for 19 formal objections to MSC fisheries certifications. Only one such

objection has been upheld such that the fishery was not certified. Here, we collate and summarize main principles: sustainability of the target fish stock, low impacts on the ecosystem, and effective, responsive management. An analysis of the formal objections indicates that

"MSC-sustainable fishing" means that the MSC label may be misleading consumers.  We believe it is misleading customers through false advertising.  Also the MSC is a "not for profit" charity making £20,000,000 + per year.

HERES WHY WE NEED A SPECIAL VESSEL

1200 HUNDRED DEAD  DOLPHINS WASHED UP

ASHORE 2019 BUT AS MANY AS 12,000 COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED

ITS MAJOR

"CRIME IN OUR OCEANS "

ITS GOING ON NOW 2020 OFF THE WEST COAST OF IRELAND

VERY DISTRESSINGLY!  Over the 9 weeks since writing in early 2019, dozens of fishing vessels deploying hundreds of miles of monofilament gill nets and dozens of Supertrawlers have killed over 10,000 dolphins YES 10,000!  whilst fishing for spawning sea bass.

As many as 4000 Cornish dolphins could have been killed too.

New reports June 2020 another 1000 + dolphins killed and real figures probably 10 times this amount killed and unseen by public killed by fishing drift nets and supertrawlers putting the region’s famous dolphin population at risk of being wiped out.

Fatal injuries

According to scientists investigating the discovery of 1000 dead animals on British and French beaches this spring, the majority of the dead dolphins suffered fatal injuries inflicted by fishing gear.

It is estimated that the bodies of 3000 more dolphins did not reach the shore – bringing the death toll to 4000.

It’s thought at least 100,000 dolphins have been killed in the last twenty years.

This is conveniently termed as BYCATCH by fishermen and authorities.  This is totally unacceptable as the fishermen KNOW full well the Dolphins are amongst the shoals of bass

1200 dead dolphins washed up on French beaches in the Vendée, Charente Maritime, and Gironde.  English beaches too, even the Isle of Wight. These deaths are only the tip of the iceberg since more than 90% of the corpses are gutted so that they sink to the seabed.  That is over 12,000 killed - maybe more.

ITS "CRIME IN OUR OCEANS"

Most of the bodies found are mutilated, with severed fins, gaff hook marks, deep cuts, FROM FISHERMEN'S KNIVES: its genocide! These dolphins, which spend winter in the Bay of Biscay, are victims of non-selective fishing operations (including English trawlers, Danish seiners, German, French vessels, and gillnetters targeting sea bass and hake for the French market.

This is a BLUE MURDER!

Sea Shepherd has watched this crime going on for 12 weeks and have documented on film

Its time for us to step up the action to protect, help, or support us commission our patrol vessel.

Pulse beaming must be totally banned, achieved IT IS BANNED from 04.01.2021 a great victory for

 BLUE SEAS PROTECTION CHARITY!!!!!!!!!!!

Electric currents have no mercy on marine life: the whole marine life is electrocuted. Quantified data are lacking with regards to the impacts of such an electrocution on marine life, especially on electro-sensitive species (sharks and rays),[1] but also on eggs, juveniles, plankton, fishes’ physiology, water chemistry etc. There is one notable study by Dutch IMARES, which showed that 50 to 70% of large cods caught by pulse trawls had their spine broken after an electric shock.[2]

18th February 2019

EU bans pulse beaming from July 2021 – 42 licences to be withdrawn this year

Electric pulse beam trawling effort will be slashed by 50% this year, and the method will be banned from July 2021, reports Tim Oliver

EU co-legislators agreed on the ban last week as part of an overall agreement on changes to the complex EU technical measures regulation.

The pulse ban will be phased in, with 42 of the current 84 European pulse fishing licenses to be withdrawn this year, and the remaining 42 by July 2021. Six vessels will be allowed to continue research into pulse fishing after 2021, and must follow a protocol validated by the European Commission’s scientific body. The Commission said it will ‘continue to follow ongoing scientific developments closely’.
